Class 9 student from Raighar block in Nabarangpur district died by suicide, prompting a police investigation into the cause, which remains unclear.
The girl, identified as Bajabai Gond (14), was studying at Chelidangari High School and staying in the school hostel. She had returned home to Jogichatan village under Kumuli Panchayat for the Dussehra holidays but did not go back to school afterward. Her body was found hanging from a mango tree behind her house, using a piece of cloth.
Family members alerted Raighar police, who registered an unnatural death case (Case No. 84/2025). ASI Manoranjan Mishra and his team reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for postmortem before handing it over to the family.
Police are collecting information from relatives, neighbors, and school authorities to determine what led to the suicide. So far, no clear reason has emerged. Investigators are focusing on why Bajabai did not return to school after the holidays and what may have triggered her sudden decision.
Block Extension Officer Shyam Sundar Dhurua also visited the family and gathered details from the school’s headmaster. Officials stress the need to uncover the circumstances behind the tragedy to prevent similar incidents.
