The capital city of Odisha was thrown into disarray today as protests erupted following a violent assault on Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo.
The incident, which took place during a public hearing at the BMC office, has sparked outrage among Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders and BMC employees, leading to a massive road blockade on Janpath that paralysed traffic and left commuters stranded for hours.
According to an FIR filed at Kharvelnagar Police Station, Sahoo was allegedly attacked by a group of 6-7 unidentified youths who dragged him, attempted to abduct him in a vehicle, and tried to misuse his mobile phone.
The Commissionerate Police have arrested three individuals—Jeevan Rout, Rashmi Mahapatra, and Debashis Pradhan—who will be presented in court under Sections 333/132/121(1)/121(2) /109/351(2) /62/140(2)/304/54/61 (2)/189(2)/190/3(5) BNS.
Further investigations are underway to identify other suspects, the police said.
In response to the assault, BJD leaders, including BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, MLA Anant Narayan Jena, and senior leader Ashok Panda, staged a sit-in protest, demanding immediate arrests of all perpetrators. The police detained several BJD leaders during the demonstration, escalating tensions.
Over 100 BMC employees joined the protest, blocking Janpath, a major thoroughfare in Bhubaneswar, for over an hour. The blockade caused severe traffic congestion, with hundreds of vehicles stranded, leaving women, children, the elderly, and patients in distress.
Mayor Das issued a stern warning, stating that BMC services would be halted starting tomorrow if no further action is taken against the attackers. Other senior BJD leaders, including Arun Sahoo, Atanu Nayak, and Sanjay Kumar Das Burma, were present at the protest site, amplifying the call for justice.
BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan condemned the assault, calling it “unacceptable and deplorable.” He confirmed having spoken with the police, who assured swift action, and noted that one or two individuals have been identified. “Our government is for the people. Wait and see; steps will be taken,” Pradhan stated.
BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi also condemned the incident on social media, emphasising that such actions are not aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ideology. “I strongly condemn the attack on a serving government official. Legal and party-level action must be taken against the culprits. Discipline and integrity are prerequisites for good governance and development,” she wrote.
As the situation unfolds, the incident has sparked a broader debate about public safety, political accountability, and the need for swift action to prevent such acts in the future. For now, Bhubaneswar remains on edge, with all eyes on the authorities to address the crisis and bring normalcy back to the city.
