Northland Shopping Centre in Preston was plunged into chaos on Wednesday afternoon following a violent incident involving multiple armed individuals, leaving several people injured, including one seriously.
According to 7NEWS Melbourne, at least one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Videos posted to social media show terrified shoppers fleeing the scene as emergency alarms blared and shops locked down. Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion, with reports of individuals armed with knives or machetes fighting inside the mall.
Eyewitnesses took to X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook to share real-time updates.
One person wrote: “Inside Northland Shopping Centre, now hiding inside a shop, multiple people attacking with knives, cops are here with guns.”
Another shared: “Just got a call from my wife who works there. All shops have closed their shutters. Lots of shouting. They don’t know what’s going on.”
A third said: “We were locked into Oscar Wylee with the lights turned off. This guy was arrested out the front.”
A concerned grandparent posted on Facebook: “My disabled grandson is locked in the dark in a shop with his support worker. I’m so angry.”
