New Zealand kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding victory over Pakistan, clinching a 60-run win at the National Stadium in Karachi.

The Kiwi side posted an imposing total of 320/5 in their 50 overs, thanks to a stellar century by Will Young, the first of the tournament. Young’s impressive innings was supported by Tom Latham, who ended his 27-month century drought by reaching three figures. Glenn Phillips also made a significant contribution with a quick-fire 61 off 39 balls, ensuring New Zealand set a challenging target for the home side.

In response, Pakistan struggled to keep up with the required run rate, ultimately being bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. Khushdil Shah was the standout performer for Pakistan, scoring a brisk 69 off 49 balls. Skipper Babar Azam provided some resistance with a 64-run knock off 90 balls. However, Pakistan’s batting line-up crumbled under pressure, registering their lowest PowerPlay score at home with just 22 runs in the first 10 overs.

New Zealand’s bowlers capitalized on this early advantage, with several wickets falling in quick succession towards the end of Pakistan’s innings. Despite a late flurry of runs from Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah, it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap, and Pakistan fell short by 60 runs.

With this victory, New Zealand has set a strong precedent for their Champions Trophy campaign, showcasing both batting depth and bowling prowess. Pakistan will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches.

Stay tuned for more updates on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
