In a historic achievement for Odisha’s tribal communities, Champa Rasbeda, a young girl from the remote Didayi tribal community of Amri Behda in Malkangiri district, has successfully cleared the NEET examination, paving the way to become the first girl from her community to pursue a medical career.
Champa, who prepared for the highly competitive exam at a private coaching centre in Balasore, said she wants to dedicate her life to eradicating superstitions that dominate her community in the absence of healthcare facilities.
“Our village doesn’t have a hospital. For minor ailments, people resort to sorcery and rituals. Being a daughter of this community, I believe they will listen to me. My goal is to serve my villagers and encourage them to seek proper medical treatment,” Champa said.
Raised in a family of farmers with three sisters and four brothers, Champa overcame immense financial hardships to achieve this milestone. She credited her success to her high school teacher, Utkal Keshari Das, who inspired and guided her throughout her journey.
“I studied in government schools and colleges. My teacher always motivated me by citing the example of Mangala Muduli from the Bonda tribe, who became the first doctor from his community last year. That gave me courage,” she said.
Champa’s success has brought joy to her family and pride to the Didayi community. She hopes to become a doctor, not only to uplift her own family but also to lead her community towards education, healthcare, and social reform.
