The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the development of a 4-lane Greenfield High-Speed Corridor spanning 166.80 km.
This significant infrastructure project will connect Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam, utilising the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).
With a capital cost of Rs 22,864 crore, this access-controlled corridor aims to reduce travel distance and time, improving connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, and the broader regions of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley. It is set to enhance logistics efficiency and promote tourism in the scenic Northeast, connecting major transport corridors and airports, including Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar.
Furthermore, the corridor is expected to drive socio-economic development by fostering industrial growth in Meghalaya’s cement and coal-producing regions. The project aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, generating 74 lakh man-days of direct employment and 93 lakh man-days of indirect employment.
