Ten people died and 31 sustained injuries when a bus collided head-on with a pick-up truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district late Thursday evening.
The accident occurred near Simaria on Nagpur Road, about an hour after passengers attended a public event addressed by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav. The bus carried more than 40 people returning from the function.
Chhindwara SP Ajay Pandey confirmed that six men, three women, and a child lost their lives in the crash. Of the injured, several remain critical, and one person was shifted to Nagpur in Maharashtra for advanced treatment.
CM Dr Mohan Yadav expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced ex-gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of each deceased and ₹1 lakh for the seriously injured. He directed officials to ensure proper medical care for all victims and ordered teams of doctors from Jabalpur to assist in Chhindwara and Nagpur.
The Chief Minister had earlier unveiled development projects worth over ₹500 crore for Chhindwara during the event. The sudden accident cast a shadow over the district, leaving families devastated and raising concerns about road safety.
Authorities continue investigating the exact cause of the collision. The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures on busy highways.
