The Union government has enhanced the protection of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, adding an additional bulletproof vehicle to his convoy.
The upgrade follows heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives.
Jaishankar currently receives Z-category security, which includes round-the-clock armed CRPF personnel. Intelligence assessments recommended increased vigilance, leading to this fortified convoy arrangement.
The CRPF currently protects over 210 high-profile individuals, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, the Dalai Lama, and key leaders from the Gandhi family.
India follows a five-tier security system, ranging from Z+ (highest) to X (lowest). Z-category security comprises 22 personnel, including NSG commandos. Jaishankar’s security was upgraded from Y-category to Z-category in October last year, with the CRPF taking over from the Delhi Police.
The security enhancement reflects India’s broader security measures amid diplomatic tensions. Experts suggest that the government is prioritising protection for key officials involved in foreign policy and national security.
