In a significant initiative to promote road safety awareness, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has organised a driver awareness program at the Unit-8 community center.
The program, which will run until June 21, aims to educate drivers about the importance of road safety and encourage responsible driving practices.
In the first phase of the program, 200 drivers received training and awareness on road safety. The event was attended by Mayor Sulochana Das as the Chief Guest and BMC Corporator No. 7, Samyata Mohanty, as the Guest of Honor. Ratnakar Sahoo, Additional Commissioner of BMC, along with Additional Commissioner Kailash Chandra Das and other senior BMC officials, were also present.
Gangadhar Sahoo, a retired IAS officer and Principal Project Officer at the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, IIT Madras, served as the resource person for the program. He shared his expertise and insights on road safety, emphasizing the need for drivers to adopt safe driving practices.
This initiative is part of the Zero Accident Day campaign launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on June 3. The campaign aims to reduce road accidents and foster a culture of road safety in the state.
“Road safety is a collective responsibility that requires the efforts of every individual to ensure safe roads. I commend the BMC for leading this initiative to educate drivers on road safety. I urge all drivers to take this training seriously and adopt safe driving practices,” said BMC Mayor Sulochana Das
“Road safety is not merely about following rules; it’s about cultivating a mindset that prioritizes safety. As drivers, it’s essential to be aware of our surroundings, follow traffic regulations, and show courtesy to other road users. I am confident that this program will make a significant impact in reducing road accidents in Bhubaneswar,” said Gangadhar Sahoo, Retd. IAS, Principal Project Officer, Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, IIT Madras.
