The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a historic victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, securing more than 200 of the 243 seats and ensuring a two-thirds majority.
This marks the BJP’s best-ever performance in the state, with the party emerging as the single-largest force for the first time.
Celebrating the win at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the party’s next mission is West Bengal. “Ganga flows through Bihar and reaches Bengal. Bihar has paved the way for the BJP’s victory in Bengal. Together, we will uproot jungle raj from West Bengal,” he said to a roaring crowd of party workers.
The 2026 Bengal Assembly elections, covering 293 seats, are expected to be fiercely contested between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. Key issues likely to dominate the campaign include women’s safety, law and order, infiltration from Bangladesh, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The SIR drive, which removed 65 lakh fake voters in Bihar, is now a contentious issue in Bengal, with rival parties accusing the BJP of targeting their voter base.
PM Modi also sharpened his attack on the Congress, branding it a “parasite party” that harms its allies. He warned that Congress’s negative politics could lead to another major split within the party, while asserting that the NDA’s victory signals a broader shift in Indian politics.
With Bihar secured, the BJP is now gearing up for Bengal, setting the stage for one of the most high-stakes electoral battles in 2026.
