Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has taken a resolute stand against the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives on April 22, 2025.

Representing the party at an All-Party meeting convened by the Union Government in the Parliament Annexe, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sasmit Patra delivered a powerful statement condemning the attack as an “inhuman and cowardly act.” The meeting aimed to unify political voices in response to the escalating security crisis in the region.

In his address, Patra conveyed the deep sorrow and solidarity of BJD and its president, Naveen Patnaik, with the families affected by the tragedy. “The Biju Janata Dal and our Hon’ble President Shri. Naveen Patnaik ji convey their deep sorrow, condolences, and solidarity with the families affected by the Pahalgam terror attack,” Patra stated. He urged the government to take decisive action to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice, emphasising the party’s unwavering support for national security measures. “We condemn this inhuman and cowardly act in the strongest possible terms. We urge the Government to take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of this gruesome attack are brought to justice,” he added.

The Pahalgam terror attack has sent shockwaves across India, prompting a robust response from both the government and opposition parties.

India has since taken stringent measures, including closing its main border crossing with Pakistan, expelling military diplomats, and suspending a landmark water-sharing treaty. Pakistan, however, has denied any involvement in the attack, which police suspect was carried out by three of four identified militants targeting visitors near the picturesque tourist town of Pahalgam.

The BJD’s statement reflects a broader national sentiment of unity against terrorism, transcending regional and political divides. Despite being a regional party primarily focused on Odisha’s socio-economic development and cultural identity since its founding in 1997 by Naveen Patnaik, the BJD has consistently positioned itself as a responsible stakeholder in national issues, particularly those concerning security.

Patra reaffirmed the party’s commitment to cooperate fully with the government, stating, “BJD reaffirms its full cooperation and support with the Government in all its efforts concerning the national security of the nation.”

The All-Party meeting saw similar calls for collective action. The opposition Congress party, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, echoed the need for a unified response, with Kharge noting, “This is no time for partisan politics.”
