The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) staged a massive protest outside the Odisha Legislative Assembly, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of curtailing the powers of elected representatives in the three-tier Panchayati Raj system.
The demonstration saw participation from thousands of sarpanches, ward members, samiti members, Zilla Parishad members, block chairpersons, and Zilla Parishad chairpersons from across the state.
The protest turned tense as BJD workers attempted to breach security barricades, leading to clashes with police. Protesters reportedly broke two barricades, resulting in chaotic scenes along Gandhi Marg. To control the situation, police deployed water cannons and detained several demonstrators.
BJD leaders alleged that the BJP government has empowered Block Development Officers (BDOs) financially, thereby reducing elected chairpersons to mere rubber stamps. They claim this move undermines the democratic foundation of local governance and weakens the voice of the people.
The protest has intensified political temperatures in the state, with expectations of further agitations in the coming days.
