The Nuapada by-election voting began on Tuesday morning, but the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is violating election rules.
According to BJD, BJP workers are allegedly pressuring voters inside booths to vote for their candidate, Jay Dholakia, and distributing food parcels near polling stations to influence voters.
The BJD district president of Nuapada, Avani Joshi, submitted a memorandum to the District Election Officer, urging immediate action to ensure a free and fair election.
BJD Raises Concerns About Booth-Level Intimidation
Dr. Lenin Mahanti, BJD spokesperson and media coordinator, stated that BJP leaders and workers are reportedly violating all election norms and codes of conduct during voting. They are allegedly coercing voters inside booths to support their candidate, creating an atmosphere of fear.
According to reports, such incidents were observed at booths 3, 4, 5, 13, 14, and 15 on Khariar Road (NAC area). Despite the presence of government officials, no preventive action was taken, and BJP workers were actively involved in campaigning near the polling booths, which is prohibited under election law.
Allegations of Voter Influence Through Food Distribution
The BJD further alleged that BJP leaders and workers are providing food parcels and tiffins to incoming voters, attempting to sway their choices. Avani Joshi called this a serious breach of the Model Code of Conduct and a threat to democratic processes.
BJD urged the District Election Officer to take immediate corrective measures to prevent voter manipulation and ensure neutral and fair by-election proceedings in Nuapada.
“This is a grave attempt to influence public opinion and undermine democratic values. Citizens must remain vigilant, and authorities should intervene without delay,” BJD leaders stated.
