The capital city of Bhubaneswar is grappling with escalating parking issues, prompting Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das to voice her concerns. She emphasised that imposing restrictions on parking without adequate alternatives is not the right approach.
Mayor Das stated that efforts will be made to increase parking spaces in the city by utilising private plots. Additionally, shop owners and shopping malls will be given time to arrange their own parking facilities. According to the mayor, appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that residents do not face unnecessary hardships. She also revealed that discussions on this matter have already been held with the Commissionerate Police.
The surge in vehicles and traffic congestion in the capital is largely attributed to irregular parking. While the police are enforcing restrictions to control this, the BMC is planning solutions to resolve the problem.
Mayor Das reiterated, “Imposing curbs on parking without proper arrangements is unfair. We will expand parking spaces and make use of private plots. Shopkeepers and shopping malls will be granted time to set up their own parking systems. Measures will be implemented to avoid inconveniencing the public.”
This announcement has provided reassurance to local residents and business owners affected by the parking crisis. Parking problems in Bhubaneswar have been a topic of discussion for a long time. Irregular parking in markets, shopping malls, and other busy areas is leading to traffic jams and related issues.
The BMC’s plan is expected to help alleviate these problems. The mayor made these statements following a corporation meeting, where several other important topics were also discussed.
