The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar is undergoing a significant transformation with a Rs 1000-crore expansion project aimed at redesigning Terminal 3 (T3) as an integrated facility.
Originally proposed as a dual-terminal system separating arrival and departure functions, the revised plan consolidates both operations into a single 65,000-square-metre terminal to improve logistics and enhance passenger convenience.
The integrated T3 will boost the airport’s capacity to 86 lakh passengers annually, with the ability to handle up to 3,000 travellers during peak hours. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) opted for the integrated model after consultations with stakeholders who raised concerns about the complexities and inefficiencies of a split-terminal setup.
Officials confirmed that sufficient space is available adjacent to the current Terminal 1 to support the expansion. The project will include the construction of at least six additional aerobridges and other infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growing air traffic. Final approval from the AAI board is awaited.
This expansion at Bhubaneswar comes amid broader aviation infrastructure developments in Odisha, notably the upcoming Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri. Authorities are currently coordinating with the Wildlife Institute of India to finalize an environmental conservation plan before proceeding to the tendering phase for
