Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara closes for three days as the annual saltwater crocodile census begins. From January 8 to January 10, tourists cannot enter the sanctuary.

Forest officials launch the crocodile census across rivers, creeks, and water bodies inside Bhitarkanika. Teams travel by boat and use binoculars to identify and count crocodiles. The census covers the entire ecosystem, ensuring accurate data collection.

The Rajnagar Forest Division oversees the operation. Officials emphasise that the census supports wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection. Bhitarkanika remains one of the largest habitats for saltwater crocodiles in the world. Thousands of crocodiles have been recorded in past years, highlighting the park’s ecological importance.

Forest staff dedicate themselves to the task, moving through remote waterways to document every sighting. The census provides insights into population trends and helps shape conservation strategies. The exercise also strengthens monitoring of the fragile mangrove ecosystem.

Authorities urge tourists not to plan visits during the census period. The park will reopen after the completion of the count. Visitors are advised to follow the forest department guidelines to avoid disruption.
