In a stunning turn of events at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, Matteo Berrettini delivered a high-quality performance to defeat two-time champion Novak Djokovic.

This marks Berrettini’s first-ever win over the former World No. 1, ending his losing streak against Djokovic in their previous encounters.

Berrettini, who had been struggling at the start of the 2025 season, found his rhythm and secured a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory. This win also signifies his first triumph over a Top 10 opponent since January 2023. Known for his powerful serve, Berrettini won an impressive 85% of points on his first serve.

Djokovic, competing in his first singles match since retiring from the Australian Open semi-final due to a hamstring injury, fought valiantly but couldn’t withstand Berrettini’s relentless play. The Italian showcased his skills with 19 forehand winners, breaking down Djokovic’s defences in a one-sided tie-break.

Berrettini, who was voted ATP’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2024, moves on to face Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.
