Epili Mithun, the branch manager of ICICI Bank’s Gosani Nuagam branch, was arrested by Berhampur police on Wednesday for defrauding customers of Rs 45.5 lakh through a fake gift card scheme.
According to police sources, the 35-year-old Mithun allegedly deceived three individuals, promising them high returns through various fraudulent schemes, including loyalty cards and Forex and Petro cards. The victims, identified as Chandan Kumar Padhy, M. Devi Prasad, and Sandeep Kumar Sahu, all residents of Berhampur, were persuaded to invest their money after Mithun gained their trust by offering loans.
The scam came to light when the victims lodged complaints at the Gosaninuagaon branch after Mithun failed to return their money despite repeated requests. In response to their complaints, Mithun allegedly threatened the victims with harassment charges.
During the investigation, police discovered that Mithun had taken Rs 16.5 lakh through credit cards and Rs 29 lakh in cash from the victims. Several incriminating documents, including details of credit card transactions, were seized from the accused. Police have also confiscated mobile phones and financial documents from Mithun, and further investigation is ongoing.
Mithun reportedly lured the victims into his fraudulent scheme during his tenure as the manager of ICICI Bank’s Dharmanagar branch in 2023. He promised high returns on investments in gift card schemes, convincing the victims to trust him.
The police have registered a case against Mithun and are continuing their investigation. No additional comments have been obtained so far.
