Bengaluru witnessed severe flooding as relentless overnight rainfall wreaked havoc across the city, leading to tragic fatalities and infrastructure disruptions.
Three individuals, including a nine-year-old boy, lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents on Monday. While one woman succumbed to injuries after a collapsing wall, two others were electrocuted while attempting to drain water from their residence.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded 105.5 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, one of the heaviest downpours witnessed in May. The downpour overwhelmed stormwater drains, forcing the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to launch evacuation operations, though a shortage of rescue equipment hampered efforts.
Meanwhile, the political blame game intensified, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticising the Congress-led government for mismanagement of funds allocated for Bengaluru’s infrastructure. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, however, assured the public that long-term flood prevention measures were being implemented.
With monsoons approaching, residents fear further disruptions, emphasising the urgent need for effective drainage solutions.
