Ben Austin, a 17-year-old cricketer from Melbourne, tragically died after a ball struck his neck during a training session at Walley Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening while he was preparing for a T20 match against Eildon Park.
Although Ben wore a helmet, the ball hit the vulnerable area between his head and neck. Immediately after the impact, medical personnel rushed to the scene and administered first aid. They then transferred him to Monash Medical Centre, where doctors placed him on life support. Despite their efforts, Ben could not survive the injury.
This heartbreaking event has reignited painful memories of Phil Hughes’ death in 2014, when a similar blow during a match claimed the life of the promising Australian batter. Once again, the cricketing world finds itself mourning a young talent lost too soon.
On Thursday morning, Ferntree Gully Cricket Club confirmed Ben’s death. “We are absolutely devastated by the passing of Ben, and the impacts of his death will be felt by all in our cricket community,” the club stated. They also urged everyone to respect the privacy of Ben’s family during this difficult time.
Ben passionately played both Aussie Rules football and cricket. He actively represented Ferntree Gully, Mulgrave, and Eildon Park Cricket Clubs. Arnie Walters, President of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association, described the loss as “enormous” and promised full support to the grieving community.
As tributes pour in, the cricketing fraternity reflects on the importance of safety in sport and the fragility of life. Ben Austin’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
