The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold “honest and professional conversations” with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regarding their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Both stalwarts, who will be nearing 40 by the tournament, are no longer guaranteed spots in India’s ODI plans. While they remain committed to staying fit for the event, the team’s transition phase and the emergence of younger talent could influence selection.
India has only 27 ODIs scheduled until the end of 2026, limiting Kohli and Rohit’s match practice if they play sporadically. Their next ODI appearance is expected in October during the Australia tour, followed by series against South Africa and New Zealand later this year.
“Both have contributed enormously to Indian cricket. No one will force them out, but their mental and physical readiness will be assessed before finalising plans for the next ODI cycle,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.
India last won the ODI World Cup in 2011, and selectors are keen on a clear roadmap for 2027.
