Assam Police, with assistance from the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate, arrested Nirup Sundar Choudhury from Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar in a Rs 3 crore fraud case.
The arrest is linked to a case registered at Bihubor Police Station in Assam’s Sivasagar district.
Choudhury is one of three accused in a high-stakes mining scam involving the misappropriation of coal profits. The prime accused, Samir Patnaik, and his associate Sunil Sahoo, remain at large after evading police during a raid in Bhubaneswar. The trio allegedly defrauded a businessman named Dushmant by selling coal extracted from an Assam mine while Dushmant was imprisoned under a false complaint filed by the accused.
Following his release, Dushmant uncovered the scam and filed a formal complaint in Assam. Despite repeated summons, the accused failed to appear, prompting Assam Police to launch a coordinated operation in Odisha. While Choudhury was apprehended, efforts are ongoing to locate Patnaik and Sahoo.
The case has sparked concern over inter-state fraud networks and the misuse of legal systems for personal gain. Authorities continue to investigate and have urged the public to remain vigilant.
