In a dramatic turn ahead of the Asia Cup Hockey 2025, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan have replaced Pakistan and Oman in the tournament lineup, following Pakistan’s withdrawal over security concerns stemming from recent geopolitical tensions.
The tournament, set to kick off on August 29 in Rajgir, Bihar, will now feature eight teams vying for a spot in the 2026 Hockey World Cup. Host India has been placed in Pool A alongside China, Japan, and Kazakhstan, while Pool B includes defending champions Korea, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, and Bangladesh.
India will face China in its opening match, while Korea begins its title defence against Chinese Taipei. The Super4s round will run from September 3 to 6, culminating in the final on September 7.
Pakistan’s exit follows the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor, which heightened regional tensions. Despite India’s assurance of visa support, the Pakistan Hockey Federation declined participation, prompting organisers to invite Bangladesh as a replacement.
Asian Hockey Federation President Fumio Ogura emphasised the tournament’s significance: “With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition and inspire millions.”
India, a three-time champion, last won the title in 2017. Korea remains the most successful team with five titles.
