Despite escalating tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2025 will proceed as scheduled, beginning September 5 in the United Arab Emirates, reports Times of India.
The India-Pakistan match is slated for September 7, marking one of the tournament’s most anticipated face-offs.
Venue Shift, But BCCI Retains Hosting Rights
India was originally set to host the tournament. However, due to political tensions and mutual agreements between India and Pakistan not to travel to each other’s countries, the competition has been moved to the UAE — a neutral venue. The BCCI will still hold the hosting rights.
The tournament will span 17 days and feature six teams:
-
India
-
Pakistan
-
Sri Lanka
-
Afghanistan
-
Bangladesh
-
United Arab Emirates
Format and Schedule
This year’s Asia Cup will follow the T20I format, acting as a vital preparatory tournament ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The format includes a group stage, followed by Super Fours, and concludes with the final on September 21.
Pahalgam Attack & BCCI’s Clarification
Earlier reports had speculated India’s potential withdrawal following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed these rumors, clarifying:
“The Asia Cup or any ACC event has not been discussed at any level. Our focus remains on IPL and the upcoming England series.”
Clearance Awaited
Participating nations are currently seeking official government clearances for travel and participation, especially India and Pakistan, given recent hostilities.
