The menace of Mahindra Thar SUVs continues to haunt Bhubaneswar. Within 24 hours of accidents that claimed four lives, another shocking incident has surfaced involving drunk youths creating chaos on city roads.
According to reports, four intoxicated youths drove recklessly, covered the number plate with stickers to evade police, and caused multiple accidents before abandoning the vehicle in Mancheswar Industrial Area. Commissionerate Police seized the black Thar (OD 02 CD 8123) and detained two individuals for questioning.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the youths climbed onto the moving SUV, danced on its roof, and even lay down on it, disrupting traffic and endangering other commuters. A video of the incident, uploaded by a social activist on social media, went viral and drew widespread condemnation.
Police confirmed that the same vehicle had been involved in several accidents earlier. The latest seizure followed instructions from the Police Commissioner, with Mancheswar police initiating a detailed probe.
This incident comes on the heels of two fatal Thar-related accidents in Bhubaneswar—at Capital Hospital Square and Pitapalli Square—where four people lost their lives due to overspeeding. Another crash was reported in Chandaka. In each case, drivers were found to be speeding beyond safe limits.
Social media users strongly criticised the reckless driving, calling Thar SUVs “vehicles of death.” Many demanded stricter enforcement against drunk driving and overspeeding, urging traffic police to intensify checks and raise public awareness.
Mancheswar police officer Dayanidhi Nayak stated that strict action would be taken against the offenders. Investigations are underway to trace the SUV’s involvement in previous accidents, and arrests will follow if necessary.
