Angul Police achieved a major legal milestone by securing a landmark conviction in a POCSO and rape case under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act.
The accused, Sudip @ Tenkaru Gochhayat, faced charges for sexually assaulting his 8-year-old niece, a case that drew intense public attention due to its gravity and the involvement of newly implemented legal provisions.
Following a written complaint by the victim’s father, Sumanta Gochhayat, police registered Angul PS Case No. 724 on September 11, 2024. Investigators swiftly acted and filed the charge sheet by November 8, 2024, under Sections 64(2)(f)(m)/65(2) of BNS, read with Section 6 of the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the IT Act.
Authorities treated the case as a red-flag matter and appointed a Holding Investigating Officer. The District Police Office (DPO) monitored the trial regularly, ensuring procedural integrity and timely progress. On October 29, 2025, the court convicted Sudip under the new criminal law and sentenced him to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, the court imposed a ₹25,000 fine, with an extra year of imprisonment in case of default.
This conviction not only reinforces the effectiveness of the BNS and POCSO Act but also highlights Angul Police’s commitment to justice and child protection. By acting decisively and coordinating across departments, the police ensured that the survivor’s voice was heard and the offender was held accountable.
