Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Amit Shah, inaugurated a 30,000 litres per day milk processing plant of the Odisha State Co-operative Milk Producers Federation Limited (OMFED) at Chandeshwar in the Tangi block of Khordha district on Friday.
The plant has been established under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) at a cost of ₹565.10 lakh.
The newly inaugurated plant will process a variety of dairy products, including milk, curd, paneer, ghee, sweet curd, and rabdi. It will enhance the procurement and marketing of milk produced by farmers from Tangi, Ranpur, Balugaon, Chilika, and Banpur blocks, thereby contributing to the economic development of dairy farmers in the region.
Established in the 1980s during Operation Flood Phase-II, OMFED has grown into a major cooperative institution supporting dairy farmers across Odisha. With the support of both State and Central Governments, OMFED has formed 4,421 Milk Cooperative Societies across 12 districts, with approximately 2.37 lakh registered members. The federation currently procures around 6 lakh litres of milk per day and has established 12 milk processing plants throughout the state, with a total processing capacity of 9.70 lakh litres per day.
During the financial year 2025–26, OMFED achieved a turnover of about ₹1,050 crore, ensuring that nearly 80 percent of the procurement value is returned to farmers. The federation produces a wide range of dairy products, including UHT milk, paneer, curd, khoya, rabdi, sweet curd, milk powder, A2 milk, A2 ghee, butter, ice cream, lassi, and buttermilk. It also offers agricultural products like Kandhamal turmeric powder.
Under White Revolution 2.0, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, has allocated ₹22.41 crore to OMFED for the formation of 1,205 new Milk Cooperative Societies. Through this initiative, approximately 47,000 new dairy farmers will be enrolled, and an additional 56,000 litres of milk will be procured daily. So far in 2025–26, 1,000 new societies have already been formed.
Under the Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana (MKY), several initiatives have been introduced to strengthen the dairy sector. These include the provision of 22 milk tankers for milk transportation and 17 bulk milk coolers for milk chilling. More than 30,000 female calves born through artificial insemination have been selected, and 4,737.55 MT of calf feed has been distributed to farmers.
To date, 9,549 beneficiaries have received ₹108.47 crore in subsidies for purchasing 15,799 cows, while 1,381 beneficiaries have received ₹18.24 crore in subsidies for purchasing 2,547 buffaloes under livestock development programs. Additional subsidies are also being provided for fodder cultivation and livestock insurance to further support dairy farmers.
On this occasion, Shri Shah distributed certificates of incorporation to newly affiliated cooperative societies and provided subsidy assistance to farmers under the Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana, Buffalo Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (BEDS), and Fodder Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (FEDS).
The event was attended by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Minister for Law, Works and Excise, Prithviraj Harichandan, and Minister for Fisheries & Animal Resources Development and MSME Department, Gokulananda Mallik, along with senior officials and dignitaries.
