E-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart have initiated a comprehensive review of internet-enabled security camera listings on their platforms in India.
The move comes in the wake of a recent analysis revealing that hundreds of third-party products were being sold without proper regulatory clearances, raising significant cybersecurity and espionage concerns.
An independent analysis recently uncovered that more than 700 out of roughly 770 internet security camera listings on the two dominant e-commerce platforms featured models absent from the Bureau of Indian Standards’ approved database.
Experts have warned that compromised or uncertified hardware can serve as a dangerous entry point for cyber threats and unauthorised data transfer.
Under stringent guidelines implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, all internet-connected CCTV cameras sold in India must secure clearance under the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) framework.
Manufacturers are required to disclose critical equipment details, including the origin of system-on-chip processors, to prevent sensitive footage from being transmitted abroad. Following the scrutiny, several uncertified listings have already been removed or marked as unavailable across platforms.
