Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar tragically died on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following a plane crash near Baramati in Pune district. The aircraft carrying Pawar and several others crashed while attempting to land, resulting in no survivors.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the loss and detailed immediate steps taken by the state government. Fadnavis said he, along with fellow Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, was traveling to Baramati to coordinate with the Pawar family on further arrangements.
In a formal announcement, Fadnavis declared a three-day period of state mourning to honour Ajit Pawar’s service to the state. He also stated that the day has been declared a state holiday as a mark of respect.
Pawar, a seasoned political leader with decades of public service, was widely respected across the political spectrum for his administrative acumen and grassroots leadership. Tributes have poured in from national and state leaders, reflecting on his contributions to Maharashtra’s governance and development.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash as authorities continue efforts to assist the bereaved families and manage the state’s response to the tragedy.
