Dhaka: Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced that the current Parliament will be dissolved by the Constitution.
In a national address from Bangabhaban, the President’s official residence, on Monday, he made this statement, as per Daily Sun.
A meeting was convened at Bangabhaban earlier that evening, involving the Chiefs of the three services, political figures, civil society representatives, and leaders of the quota movement. The gathering, chaired by Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, focused on establishing an interim government.
President Shahabuddin presided over the meeting, where attendees passed a resolution of condolence for those who perished in the protests and sought divine mercy and peace for their souls, a press release stated.
The assembly reached a unanimous decision to immediately release Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Furthermore, it was agreed to free all detainees from the recent movement involved in various cases. The meeting also reached a consensus that communal harmony must be preserved at all costs, as reported by Daily Sun.
The meeting’s participants included BNP’s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas; Jatiya Party’s GM Quader, Mojibul Haque Chunnu, and Anisul Islam; Mahmudur Rahman Manna from Nagarik Oikya; Hefazat-e-Islam’s Mamunul Haque, Mufti Monir Kasemi, and Mahabubur Rahman; Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Sheikh Md Masood; Shamim Haider from Zaker Party; Zonayed Saki of the Mass Solidarity Movement; Dhaka University’s Asif Nazrul; and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinators Arif Talukder, Omar Faruq, and Mobashwera Karim Mimi.
General Waker-uz-Zaman, who recently became the Bangladesh Army Chief, was tasked with formally declaring the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and presenting a strategy to return stability to the nation, which has been shaken by violent demonstrations.
