Rourkela: Rourkela Steel Plant CEO Mr. Dipak Chattaraj has stressed upon the need of a cultural transformation in matters of safety by way of continuously training and retraining the employees.
A Safety Review Meeting for the month of June was organised in virtual mode at SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant on Friday. Mr. Dipak Chattaraj, CEO, RSP chaired the meeting. Mr. K K Jha, Executive Director, SAIL Safety Organisation (SSO), Ranchi; Mr. Raj Vir Singh, Executive Director (HA); Mr. Pankaj Kumar, ED (Works); Mr. S R Suryawanshi, ED(Operation); Mr. A K Pradhan, ED(Projects); Mr. P K Satapathy, ED(P&A); Mr. C R Mohapatra, CGM Incharge (MM & Marketing); Mr. P Nigam, CGM Incharge (F&A) as well as all the Chief General Managers, Heads of Departments and Departmental Safety Officers (DSO) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) joined the meeting online.
It is noteworthy that this monthly review at apex level, which is instrumental in controlling and monitoring the safety aspects of the plant, is regularly being conducted every month without fail. On account of the pandemic, the meeting is being conducted in virtual mode.
Addressing the Senior Members, the CEO stressed upon the need of a cultural transformation in matters of safety by way of continuously training and retraining the employees. He called upon the collective to make a special drive to bring about a change in mindset and also to proactively improve on the systems and facilities. The CEO also laid emphasis upon the need of follow-up activities to ensure better performance and for developing modules on different aspects for future learning. Referring to the ‘Rakshak’ scheme launched recently for encouraging employees to report the near-miss cases, he urged the collective to maximise such reporting, the analysis and remedial measures, which will help in preventing accidents.
During the meeting, a presentation was made by Mr. S C Mohanty, GM Incharge (SED) where he highlighted the improvements and achievements made in various domains such as Road / Rail safety, Gas Pipe Line Safety, Hazardous Storage Area Safety, Crane Safety, Conveyor Safety, Pressure Vessel Safety, Boiler Safety, Electrical Safety, Overhead Electrification and Fire Safety. This was followed by review of action taken and progress with respect to issues raised in previous Safety Review Meeting.
Presentations were also made on safety performance and activities of Hot Strip Mill and Oxygen Plant by Mr. Chandrahas, AGM (HSM) and Mr. C P Baskey, DGM (Oxygen Plant) respectively. The causes of all the safety related issues were discussed threadbare. The CEO interacted with the concerned HODs and DSOs regarding the causes and the actions taken in this regard.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. K K Jha highly appreciated the various steps and systems undertaken by RSP. He urged all to follow the safety systems and procedures as laid in SOPs and other relevant documents.
Mr. Pankaj Kumar highlighted the different measures taken by RSP in matters of safety of plant, equipment and individuals, and expressed confidence that the initiatives taken by RSP collective are in the right track to achieve Zero Accident.
Mr. S R Suryawanshi, Mr. A K Pradhan, Mr. P K Satapathy, Mr. C R Mohapatra and Mr. Praveen Nigam made several useful observations for further improvement of safety standards in the plant.
Earlier, Mr. S C Mohanty welcomed the participants. He also coordinated the programme.
