A massive disruption to nationwide banking services has been averted after the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) officially confirmed the deferment of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike, which was scheduled for September 28–30.

The breakthrough came late Sunday night following a crucial meeting between representatives of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and UFBU. According to statements released by the unions, both bodies agreed to immediately form a high-level committee to constructively deliberate on key employee demands—chiefly the declaration of remaining Saturdays as official bank holidays.

Averting a Half-Yearly Financial Crunch

The proposed strike had raised widespread concerns among customers, business owners, and market watchers alike. Timed immediately after the weekend and culminating on September 30—the critical half-yearly closing date for banks—the agitation threatened to severely impact branch-based transactions, cash clearances, and treasury operations.

Prior to the late-night consensus, authorities had scrambled to implement contingency measures. The Controller General of Accounts had issued an office memorandum advancing the disbursement of September salaries and pensions for central government employees, defence personnel, and postal staff to September 25. Furthermore, major public-sector lenders, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, and Indian Bank, had waived extra ATM charges to ease financial pressures on account holders.

Path Forward on 5-Day Banking

While short-term panic has settled with normal banking operations resuming across branches, the core issues surrounding pension reforms and the implementation of a comprehensive five-day work week remain central to future dialogues. With the formation of the joint high-level committee, banking employees and management have returned to the negotiating table, offering a window for a permanent resolution without putting customers in the lurch.
