“No Player Wins Alone”: IGP Satyajit Nayak Highlights Lessons from Hockey for Police Personnel

Speaking to officers and participating teams, Dr Nayak emphasised that the annual championship is far more than a sporting contest—it is an invaluable platform to nurture core attributes required in daily law enforcement. He noted that hockey has become inseparable from Odisha’s sporting identity, with local athletes rising from grassroots grounds to excel on the world stage.

According to the Central Range IGP, the core demands of policing—physical endurance, situational awareness, tactical discipline, emotional resilience, and executing under pressure—directly mirror the skills needed on a hockey field.

“No player can win a match alone. Every pass requires trust and every defensive move requires coordination,” Dr Nayak observed, underscoring that collective responsibility and seamless coordination are as vital in maintaining law and order as they are in scoring goals.

Dr Nayak urged the competing squads to play with intensity while strictly honouring the rules, game officials, and their opponents. True sportsmanship, he noted, teaches humility in victory and offers valuable lessons for growth in defeat.

Encouraging younger personnel across units and districts to embrace sports as a lifelong habit, Dr Nayak highlighted how regular physical activity directly boosts operational readiness and stress management on duty. He also commended the Odisha Police Sports & Cultural Association alongside coaches, referees, and support personnel for organising the flagship tournament.

Concluding his address, Dr Nayak reminded players that sportsmanship transcends the final scoreboard: “The real victory is not only in lifting the trophy; it is in becoming a better athlete, a better teammate, and ultimately a better police officer.”
