The Rayagada District and Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his younger brother in 2022.
District and Sessions Judge Damodar Rath found the accused, Dambu Huika, guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for killing his younger brother, Mindburu Huika.
Alongside the life sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, with an additional six-month imprisonment penalty in case of non-payment.
The murder occurred in 2022 under the jurisdiction of Kalyansinghpur Police Station (Case No. 115/2022), later tried in court as CT Case No. 42/2023.
In a rare and heartbreaking turn of events, the key complainant in the case was the elderly mother of both the deceased and the accused.
Showing extraordinary courage during the judicial process, the mother lodged the initial police complaint and provided crucial testimony supporting the prosecution to ensure justice for her younger son.
The case was investigated by then-Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Mukundadev Nayak, while Public Prosecutor Bikram Kumar Kunda represented the government during trial proceedings.
Acknowledging the immense emotional and financial trauma faced by the mother—who lost one son to murder while seeing her other son sentenced to life in prison—the court issued a compassionate order directing the State Government to provide ₹2 lakh in financial compensation to the elderly woman.
