Odisha’s weather could see a significant shift over the coming days as a cyclonic circulation over north Thailand is likely to move into the North Andaman Sea, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The upper-air cyclonic circulation, which persisted over north Thailand at 5:30 am IST on September 18, 2026, extends up to the middle-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to emerge over the North Andaman Sea by the evening of September 18.
The IMD said the low-pressure area is likely to intensify gradually after formation and move west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the following three to four days.
Low-Pressure Area Likely To Form By September 19
According to the IMD update issued at 5:30 am on September 18, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the North Andaman Sea around the evening of September 19 under the influence of the cyclonic circulation.
The weather system is then expected to gradually intensify as it moves further west-northwestwards.
System May Move Towards Odisha Coast
The IMD said the developing system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent three to four days.
This puts the weather system on close watch for Odisha, particularly as its movement and intensity could influence rainfall conditions along and over parts of the state.
September 23–25 Remain Important
The period around September 23 to 25 is likely to remain important as the system progresses towards the eastern coast.
Earlier weather assessments indicated that atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal and the North Indian Ocean could remain favourable for further development, cloud formation and rainfall.
However, the system is still in the developmental stage, and its eventual intensity, track and impact will depend on how it evolves after emerging over the North Andaman Sea.
IMD Monitoring System Closely
The latest update does not indicate that the system will necessarily become a cyclone. At present, the forecast is for the formation of a low-pressure area, followed by gradual intensification and west-northwestward movement.
The IMD is expected to provide further updates on the system’s track and intensity as it develops over the coming days.
For Odisha, the September 19–25 period will therefore remain important from the weather perspective, particularly for rainfall activity along the coast and southern parts of the state.
