Political Row Erupts as Full ‘Vande Mataram’ Played Before India vs Afghanistan T20I

In a first for international sport, all six stanzas of Vande Mataram were played before India’s opening T20 International against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated that the national song will now precede the first match of every home series.

The Ministry of Home Affairs recently issued guidelines permitting the complete rendition at formal government events, prescribing a 3‑minute 10‑second version and requiring attendees to stand at attention.

However, the move has triggered political controversy. The Congress party, citing its 1937 resolution to use only the first two stanzas, questioned the relevance of the full rendition. Party leader Udit Raj asked whether such gestures would address pressing issues like unemployment, debt, or youth concerns, calling it an attempt to “create a narrative.”

The BJP, meanwhile, slammed Congress’ opposition, accusing it of appeasement politics and a “Muslim League mindset.” The row follows earlier friction between Congress and its ally, the National Conference, when the full song was played at a film festival in Srinagar.

The debate underscores how cultural symbolism continues to intersect with politics, even on the sporting field.
