The five young orangutan cubs rescued from the Badapahi forest in Balasore’s Vichitrapur area are currently under 24-hour observation in the quarantine ward of the Nandanankanan Zoological Park.

Separated from their mothers, subjected to gruelling transit, and thrust into an entirely foreign environment, the cubs showed immediate signs of acute psychological trauma—clinging to one another and emitting distressed calls upon arrival. Four of the five rescued animals are under one year of age.

Therapeutic Care and Classical Music

To combat the severe mental stress, the forest department and Nandanankanan authorities have rolled out specialised therapeutic measures. Nandanankanan Deputy Director Pradeep Mirase noted that, following expert advice and scientific literature, classical music is being played inside the quarantine rooms to soothe the animals. A dedicated sound system broadcasts soft tunes and Indian classical compositions around the clock.

Additionally, the enclosure has been outfitted with hammocks, soft toys, and other enrichment tools. The cubs are gradually adapting, frequently playing with one another and bonding with their keepers.

Dietary and Medical Updates

The animals are being fed a nourishing diet comprising bananas, apples, milk, and Cerelac. While one cub recently suffered from a brief bout of fever, it has since recovered. Veterinarians are maintaining round-the-clock vigilance, though blood sample collection has been temporarily postponed for about 10 days to prevent causing additional stress.

As the Special Task Force (STF) continues its investigation into the international wildlife smuggling ring responsible for illegally bringing the non-native species into India, priority remains squarely on the physical and psychological rehabilitation of the young cubs. Through soothing music, dedicated handlers, and a safe environment, Nandanankanan is working to help these vulnerable animals heal.
