Preparations for Kataka’s iconic maritime festival, Bali Yatra 2026, are officially underway following a high-level review meeting chaired by Odisha’s Chief Secretary Anu Garg, IAS, at the Lok Seva Bhawan on Saturday.
The administration aims to elevate the festival into a safer, better-organized, and internationally recognized event while maintaining a strict focus on sustainability.
During the meeting, Chief Secy Garg emphasized projecting Odisha’s ancient maritime trading heritage onto the global stage, advocating for a completely plastic-free “Green Bali Yatra.”
Key Highlights and Historical Benchmarks
Kataka Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde presented the roadmap for the upcoming festival, set to commence on November 24, 2026. Highlighting the scale of the event, the Collector shared key figures from the 2025 edition:
- Footfall: Over 65 lakh visitors attended in 2025, with a single-day peak record of 12 lakh attendees.
- Economic Impact: The fair generated business exceeding ₹400 crore across 1,420 stalls and 396 vending zones, with traders joining from 24 states. ORMAS stalls alone accounted for ₹57 crore in sales.
- Expanded Crafts & Artisans Support: For 2026, ORMAS will set up 500 stalls to support local artisans and self-help groups. Designated vending zones and prominent placements for handloom and handicraft stalls have also been approved.
Global Reach & Cultural Exchange
In a major international push under the “Taking It to Bali” initiative, Indonesia is slated to participate as the official partner country for 2026. Plans include:
- Sending a high-level delegation from Odisha to Bali, Indonesia, to strengthen trade, tourism, and cultural ties.
- Hosting cultural troupes from Bali, Indonesia, to perform at the festival alongside local artists.
- Streamlining the cultural setup by managing two main stages instead of three for improved crowd management and performance flow.
Logistics, Traffic, and Green Measures
To accommodate the massive influx of visitors across both the Upper and Lower Bali Yatra grounds, the administration has laid out detailed management plans:
- Dedicated Parking & Shuttle Services: Half of the Chahata Road stretch will be converted into a dedicated parking zone. Additional shuttle bus services will run continuously between parking areas and the grounds.
- Mahanadi Water Sports & Attractions: The Tourism Department is planning several water-based attractions and activities along the Mahanadi riverfront.
- Eco-Friendly Mandatory Standard: The festival will enforce strict “Plastic-Free” guidelines across all commercial and food zones.
Governance and Coordination
The meeting was attended by senior state officials, including Additional Chief Secretary (Home, Industries, I&PR) Hemant Sharma, W&CD Principal Secretary Dr. Mrinalini Darswal, Tourism Secretary Balwant Singh, Culture Secretary Bijay Ketan Upadhyaya, and Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh.
Chief Secy Garg instructed all departments to work in close coordination, announcing that additional Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officers, engineers, and security personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth execution, security protocols, and guest management for visiting dignitaries.
