The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) marked Local Self‑Government Day with the unveiling of several major projects aimed at strengthening civic infrastructure and improving living conditions in the capital city.
Among the highlights is the state’s first pet crematorium, set to be inaugurated soon by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, offering residents a dignified facility for pet cremation.
The civic body also announced a comprehensive drainage master plan prepared in collaboration with IIT Roorkee, with priority interventions planned in areas such as ISKCON, Bomikhal, Rudrapur Canal and Naharkanta. Detailed Project Reports have been prepared, and the tender process for the ISKCON drainage project is complete.
To ease waste management pressure, BMC is working to complete a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant by year‑end, alongside a proposed waste‑processing facility under a state‑mandated MoU.
Urban development initiatives include upgrading major markets such as Bhagabanpur, Badagada, Unit‑4 and Tarini Market, expediting construction of the Pahala street food hub, and infrastructure projects in Daruthenga covering roads, parks, a Kalyan Mandap and drainage systems.
The state government also reiterated its commitment to making Bhubaneswar slum‑free, with plans to provide permanent housing to slum dwellers.
In another sustainability push, 30 public toilets across the city will be equipped with Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to enable water reuse.
BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana said the initiatives reflect the civic body’s focus on sustainable waste management, drainage, sanitation and improved civic amenities, underscoring Bhubaneswar’s urban development drive.
