As India celebrates National Sports Day on August 29, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, is reaffirming its commitment to nurturing sporting talent at the grassroots and creating opportunities for young athletes to shine.
By combining talent identification, professional coaching, mentorship, nutrition, and exposure to competitive platforms, TPSODL is using sports as a powerful way to empower youth and strengthen communities across Southern Odisha.
At the core of this journey is the “Catch Them Young” initiative, which identifies promising athletes at the school level and provides them with a structured pathway for growth. Starting with 16 talented youngsters, the programme expanded through systematic school level screenings, identifying 17 more students for advanced athletic development.
TPSODL’s approach goes beyond training. Selected athletes receive professional coaching, structured practice, expert mentorship, nutritional guidance, performance monitoring, and opportunities to compete at district, state, and national levels. This holistic support helps them build not only sporting skills but also discipline, confidence, and resilience.
The results are already visible. TPSODL-supported athletes have won multiple medals at district competitions, while four athletes qualified for the Delhi State Open Athletics Championships 2026 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. Among them, Puspabati Raita secured third place in the 600m event, a shining example of how grassroots talent can flourish with the right support.
TPSODL’s vision also embraces inclusivity. The company has extended sports kits and equipment to children with disabilities and special needs. More than 200 visually impaired students at the Red Cross Blind School in Baliguda, Malkangiri, and Koraput have benefited, while support to SAIMA Special School, Kodala has created opportunities for children with special needs to participate in sports. Equipment support has also been extended to young athletes in disciplines such as weightlifting, reinforcing TPSODL’s mission of enabling access to sports at the community level.
Speaking on this, Mr. Amit Kumar Garg, CEO, TPSODL, said: “Sport is not merely about winning medals; it is about building confidence, discipline, resilience and the belief that every young person can achieve more. At TPSODL, we are committed to identifying talent at the grassroots and providing the right ecosystem of coaching, mentorship, nutrition and exposure so that promising athletes can realise their potential. Our aim is also to make sports more inclusive, ensuring that children from diverse backgrounds and abilities get an opportunity to participate, grow and excel.”
With more than 320 children and young athletes directly benefiting from its initiatives, TPSODL is steadily building a model that connects grassroots talent identification with sustained development and competitive exposure.
Sports is equally becoming part of the workplace culture at TPSODL. The organisation conducts sporting competitions across its circles and at the Corporate level, including badminton, table tennis, carrom, chess and cricket, enabling employees from different parts of Southern Odisha to come together, compete and build camaraderie. Annual badminton and table tennis competitions at the Corporate level further strengthened this spirit of participation and teamwork.
The sporting culture extends to the company’s wider partner ecosystem through the Business Associates Sports Meet. The 2026 edition at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, Berhampur, brought together 220 participants from 20 Business Associates, with track events and team games promoting fitness, teamwork and healthy competition.
Beyond organised tournaments, TPSODL employees and sports coaches have also participated in marathons and endurance events, encouraging a broader culture of fitness and active living among the workforce.
As National Sports Day honours the spirit of sporting excellence and the legacy of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, TPSODL continues to believe that every promising athlete deserves an opportunity to be seen, supported, and encouraged. Through its sustained sports initiatives, the company is transforming potential into performance and building a stronger sporting ecosystem for the youth of Southern Odisha.
