The Hirakud Dam authorities opened two additional gates on Wednesday, taking the total number of open gates to 17 as inflows into the reservoir continued to rise.
Officials confirmed that floodwater is currently being discharged through 11 gates on the left side and 6 gates on the right side of the dam. The reservoir level has climbed to 620.17 feet, with inflows recorded at 3,77,081 cusecs and outflows at 2,68,883 cusecs.
The large‑scale release underscores the dam management’s efforts to regulate water levels and ensure downstream safety amid heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.
Authorities continue to monitor inflows and downstream conditions closely, urging residents in low‑lying areas along the Mahanadi river system to remain alert.
