Phase 1 of Census 2027 underway
The first phase, covering the House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), is currently underway and will continue until September 30.
Field visits for the house-listing exercise began on April 16 in several states and Union territories.
During this phase, enumerators visit houses and buildings and ask respondents 33 questions covering household facilities, details of the head of the household and property ownership, among other information.
The second phase will shift the focus from housing and household characteristics to detailed population enumeration, covering demographic, social, economic and migration-related information.
The inclusion of caste in the questionnaire makes Census 2027 particularly significant, as it will provide nationwide official data on caste alongside the other demographic indicators collected through the exercise.
