North Odisha drenched: 17 places get over 10 cm rain in 24 hours, waterlogging spreads

Officials monitor rivers closely as continuous downpours trigger widespread waterlogging; no major flood threat yet

Life has turned miserable for residents of North Odisha as continuous heavy rainfall triggers widespread waterlogging across several districts.

In the last 24 hours alone, 17 locations recorded more than 100 mm (10 cm) of rain, raising concerns over rising river levels and drainage challenges in low-lying areas.

The Water Resources Department is keeping a close watch on the Jalaka, Salandi and Baitarani rivers. While officials have ruled out the immediate threat of a major flood, they warn that prolonged waterlogging could disrupt daily life and agriculture in vulnerable pockets.

“Upper catchment areas are receiving heavy rain while drainage in the lower reaches is getting restricted. This can lead to water accumulation in low-lying zones even without a major flood,” said Engineer-in-Chief Dilip Rout at a press conference in Sech Sadan.

Particular worry surrounds the Jalaka river. Further heavy rain in its upper reaches could push water levels higher, severely affecting low-lying areas of Basta and Baleshwar Sadar blocks. When rainwater mixes with river flow, drainage systems come under intense pressure, leaving roads, farmlands and residential areas submerged for longer periods.

Similar concerns exist along the Salandi and Baitarani. In Bhadrak district, Tihidi and Chandbali are already experiencing waterlogging, while Dasrathpur in Jajpur remains vulnerable. Farmers fear crop damage if standing water persists in paddy fields and other cultivated lands.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts, predicting very heavy rainfall. These districts form the upper catchments of several major rivers, meaning excess rain here could later impact downstream areas.

Other major rivers present a relatively stable picture for now. The Brahmani and Subarnarekha show no signs of major flooding, while the Mahanadi remains under control. The Hirakud reservoir water level has dropped to 614 feet, with two gates currently open after four were closed earlier in the day.

Authorities emphasise that the situation remains fluid and depends on the intensity of rain in the coming hours. Continuous monitoring of river levels and rapid drainage of waterlogged areas are the twin priorities for the administration.

Residents in affected zones have been advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel through submerged stretches, and follow official updates closely as the monsoon continues to lash northern Odisha.
