A woman and her seven‑year‑old son died after being bitten by snakes while sleeping at their home in Kadambatal village under Jalang Panchayat in Rayagada block of Odisha’s Gajapati district.
The deceased have been identified as Lalita Badarait (30) and her son Amit (7). Lalita’s husband, Ajay Kumar Badarait, and their one‑and‑a‑half‑year‑old daughter narrowly escaped unharmed.
According to reports, the family was asleep on Thursday night when two common kraits entered the house and bit Lalita and Amit. Both woke up in severe pain and cried for help, alerting Ajay, who reportedly saw the snakes moving inside the house.
The victims were rushed to the Rayagada Community Health Centre and later referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Paralakhemundi as their condition worsened. Despite medical efforts, both succumbed to the snakebite while undergoing treatment.
