Supreme Court Metro closure CJP protest

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Thursday assured the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) that he would personally intervene if the Supreme Court Metro station was not reopened by lunchtime, after lawyers raised concerns over restricted access due to ongoing student protests.

SCBA President Vikas Singh mentioned the issue before a bench led by the CJI, highlighting that closure of multiple Delhi Metro stations, including the Supreme Court station, was causing hardship to lawyers, litigants, and staff. “If nothing is done by lunchtime to reopen them, and if the DMRC has not taken any action by then, we will look into the matter,” the CJI said, assuring the Bar of intervention if required.

The Chief Justice clarified that no adverse judicial orders would be passed merely because lawyers were unable to reach court owing to the Metro shutdown. He added that the Supreme Court administration had already been asked to engage with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to find a solution.

Singh suggested a restricted‑access mechanism, allowing only lawyers, litigants, and Registry staff with valid proximity cards to exit at the Supreme Court station after security screening.

The DMRC had shut 16 Metro stations, including the Supreme Court station, as a precautionary measure following the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)‑led student protests over the NEET‑UG 2026 paper leak and reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA). The agitation, ongoing for nearly a month at Jantar Mantar, escalated after the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march and subsequent police action.
