India announced its 20-member women’s hockey squad for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4.
Captain Salima Tete will lead the team that targets gold and qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The lineup features veteran goalkeepers Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam. The defence includes Sushila Chanu, Ishika Chaudhary, Jyoti, and newcomers Lalthantluangi and Shilpi Dabas. The midfield, led by Salima, comprises Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Neha, and Deepika Soreng. The forward line boasts Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Deepika, Baljeet Kaur, and Beauty Dungdung.
Coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed confidence in the team’s balance and readiness. “We have a group with a nice mix of juniors, experienced players, and seniors who push each other to perform their best,” he said.
The squad includes only two changes from the FIH Nations Cup-winning side — Baljeet Kaur and Beauty Dungdung replace Sonam and Annu. Marijne added that the players have shown strong form and fitness in recent months and are prepared for the Asian Games challenge.
India’s campaign will focus on maintaining consistency and converting opportunities as the team seeks to reclaim continental dominance and secure its Olympic berth.
