Actor and environmental activist Dia Mirza has found herself at the centre of an online debate after sharing a story about her five-year-old son, Avyaan, asking a coconut delivery worker not to bring plastic packaging into their home.
While the actor intended the anecdote to highlight environmental awareness, many social media users criticised it as an example of privilege.
What Dia Mirza Shared
During a conversation on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast, Dia Mirza recalled an incident involving a coconut water delivery.
According to Dia, Avyaan opened the door and politely but firmly told the delivery worker that plastic bags and plastic straws were not allowed in their home. He reportedly asked the worker to remove the coconut from the plastic packaging, place it outside, and take the plastic and straw back.
Soha Ali Khan appreciated the child’s confidence, saying it reflected strong values and conviction at a young age.
Social Media Divided Over the Incident
Soon after the clip surfaced online, it triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms.
Many users praised Dia Mirza for teaching her son about environmental responsibility from an early age. However, others argued that the delivery worker was simply doing his job and questioned whether the interaction placed an unfair burden on him.
Several critics described the incident as an example of privilege, while others suggested that customers concerned about plastic waste should instead carry reusable containers or purchase directly from local vendors.
Dia Mirza’s Environmental Advocacy
Dia Mirza has long been associated with environmental causes and sustainable living. She frequently speaks about reducing plastic waste, climate awareness and responsible consumption.
The actor has consistently used her public platform to encourage eco-friendly habits and has been involved in several environmental campaigns over the years.
Personal and Professional Life
Dia Mirza married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021, and the couple welcomed their son Avyaan later that year.
On the professional front, Dia is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix film Ikka, which also stars Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna.
Although the story was shared as a parenting moment promoting sustainability, it has sparked a wider online discussion about environmental responsibility, social privilege and the way such values are communicated.
