Under the storied skies of Lord’s, the Indian women’s cricket team saw their 2026 T20 World Cup journey come to a bittersweet end on Sunday.

Australia, the defending champions, chased down India’s challenging total of 170 for 4 with six wickets and an over to spare, securing a hard-fought victory that sent the Women in Blue packing.

The match had all the ingredients of a classic. India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, put on a solid batting display, reaching 170 in their 20 overs. Yet Australia’s powerful batting lineup proved too clinical, cruising to 172 for 4 in just 19 overs. The result left Indian fans proud of the fight but disappointed by the narrow margin of defeat.

Standout performer Deepti Sharma stole the spotlight earlier in the contest, breaking the all-time record for most wickets in women’s international cricket. Her milestone moment briefly swung the momentum India’s way, and the team looked in total control at times. However, Australia’s depth and composure in the chase ultimately proved decisive.

The loss marks the end of what has been an inspiring tournament for the Indian side. From record-breaking individual feats to passionate support from fans — including special guests Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri spotted in the stands — the campaign showcased the growing strength and global appeal of women’s cricket in India.

As the team reflects on the campaign, eyes will now turn to the future. Lessons from this high-stakes clash against the world’s best will undoubtedly fuel the next chapter for a talented squad that continues to push boundaries.
