The stage is set for a thrilling Tri-Nation A Series final as India A and Sri Lanka A prepare to battle for the title on Sunday.
However, much of the pre-match discussion has centered around teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the heated on-field exchange that occurred during the teams’ previous meeting.
Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige has now dismissed allegations that his team deliberately targeted the 15-year-old Indian batter during the tournament.
Sahan Arachchige Breaks Silence on Controversy
Speaking ahead of the final, Arachchige denied reports suggesting Sri Lankan players were intentionally provoking Sooryavanshi throughout the competition.
“The boys are not targeting anyone. They are just enjoying themselves. In a close game like a Super Over, emotions come out. That’s normal,” Arachchige told Sportstar.
He added that his squad consists of experienced players who understand how to handle high-pressure situations.
“There are a lot of experienced players in this team. They know what to do, and they know how to play,” he said.
What Happened Between Sooryavanshi and Halambage?
The controversy erupted after India A suffered a Super Over defeat against Sri Lanka A during the group stage.
Reports claimed Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage repeatedly exchanged verbal remarks with Sooryavanshi during the match. According to reports, one of the comments allegedly directed at the young batter was, “Go home, this is not the IPL.”
Following the match, tensions boiled over when Halambage reportedly approached Sooryavanshi and fellow Indian batter Suryansh Shedge. The Indian youngster reacted by pushing the Sri Lankan player before teammates and officials intervened.
Former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella was among those who helped calm the situation.
Mixed Reactions to Sooryavanshi’s Response
The incident sparked widespread debate among cricket fans and experts.
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar suggested that disciplinary action could have been considered against the youngster.
Manjrekar remarked that if he had been part of the India A management, he would have dropped Sooryavanshi for the next match to send a strong message about maintaining composure on the field.
Despite the controversy, the young batter remains one of India’s brightest prospects.
India A and Sri Lanka A Set for Blockbuster Final
India A secured their place in the final after a dominant 101-run victory over Afghanistan A. Sri Lanka A followed suit by defeating Afghanistan A to set up a title clash against Tilak Varma’s side.
The final is expected to attract significant attention, not only because of the rivalry between the two teams but also due to the spotlight on Sooryavanshi following the recent incident.
Bigger Challenges Await Sooryavanshi
After the Tri-Nation Series final, Sooryavanshi and India A captain Tilak Varma are expected to travel to Ireland for the upcoming T20I series.
The young batter is on the verge of creating history. He could become the youngest player ever to represent India’s senior men’s cricket team.
Earlier this year, Sooryavanshi also broke a long-standing record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar by becoming the youngest player selected in an Indian squad.
As India A and Sri Lanka A prepare for the final showdown, all eyes will once again be on the teenage prodigy and whether he can let his bat do the talking on the biggest stage.
