Thunderstorms, Rain & Hail Alert for Odisha: IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Warnings

Several parts of Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Berhampur, witnessed rainfall on Saturday triggered by thunderstorms.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that such weather conditions will continue over the next few days across the state.

The IMD has issued both orange and yellow warnings for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and hail in various districts of Odisha.

Weather Forecast and Warnings:

Day 1 (Valid till 8:30 AM, March 23, 2025):
Orange Warning:

  • Thunderstorm with lightning and hail accompanied by gusty winds (50-60 kmph) likely in Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, and Sundargarh.
  • Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) along with thunderstorms in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.

Yellow Warning:

  • Thunderstorm with lightning and winds (40-50 kmph) in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

Day 2 (8:30 AM, March 23 to 8:30 AM, March 24, 2025):
Yellow Warning:

  • Thunderstorm with lightning likely in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Day 3 (8:30 AM, March 24 to 8:30 AM, March 25, 2025):
Yellow Warning:

  • Thunderstorm with lightning in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

The IMD has advised people to remain alert and avoid open areas during thunderstorms. Farmers have also been cautioned about potential crop damage due to hailstorms and gusty winds.

Odisha Vigilance today arrested Debadyuti Nanda, former Junior Assistant of the office of the Block Education Officer (BEO), Baliapal, for allegedly misappropriating government funds worth Rs 37.32 lakh. Nanda, currently posted as Junior Assistant at Padmalochan Government High School, Jagai, Baliapal, was taken into custody for preparing forged arrear pay bills between 2022 and 2026. According to Vigilance sources, Nanda fraudulently inserted his own forged arrear bills into the arrear DA bills of other employees under the BEO office, taking advantage of his position as bill clerk‑cum‑accountant. The manipulation allowed him to divert government money into his own account. A case has been registered at Baleshwar Vigilance PS Case No. 13/2026 under Sections 13(2) r/w 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 and Sections 467, 468, 471, 477‑A of the IPC. The accused is being forwarded to court today. Officials said the arrest underscores Odisha Vigilance’s continued drive against financial irregularities in government offices and its focus on digital transparency and accountability.
